Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Small trees or shrubs, rarely sprawling in windswept sites.

Stems: Stems 2–6 m long, branchlets strigose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, closely spaced. Blades oblong, elliptic, or narrowly obovate, (2.5–)3.5–9 cm long, (1.2–)1.5–4 cm wide. Apex obtuse to rounded, occasionally acute. Base subcordate to truncate or cuneate. Upper surfaces glabrous; lower surfaces sparsely strigose along midrib;, coriaceous, veins reddish; lower surfaces conspicuously reticulate. Margins closely serrulate, the teeth inflexed, mucronulate. Petioles (1–)2–3 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1–2 in the leaf axils, nodding. Flowers unisexual; pedicels ca. 5 mm long, ± strigose; bracteoles 2, minute. Calyx of 5 sepals, purplish brown, thick–coriaceous, suborbicular, unequal, 3–4 mm long, ± strigose, imbricate, persistent, enlarging up to ca. 8 mm long in fruit. Corolla of 5 petals, pale yellow to cream, somewhat fleshy, obovate, 5–6 mm long, connate at base. Staminate flowers with 10–15 Stamens in a single series; filaments distinct, adnate to base of petals, with nectaries at base, ca. 1⁄2 as long as anthers; anthers opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers with 5–6 staminodes 2–3 mm long. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 2–6-carpellate, 3–4-celled; placentation axile; ovules 4–60 per cell; styles 3–4.

Fruit: Globose berry; dark bluish black; 7–10 mm in diameter. Seeds numerous; not winged; endosperm present.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Mesic to wet forest and diverse mesic forest; often on ridges.

Elevation Range: 400–1,600 m.
