Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 35–60 m tall.

Stems: Bark green to yellow or red, orange, brown, and purple, smooth throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult leaves opposite. Blades ovate to ovate–lanceolate, 10–20 cm long, 6–10 cm wide. Apex apiculate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 7–13 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in umbels arranged in terminal and axillary paniculate inflorescences, peduncles 5–10 mm long, pedicels 4–6 mm long. buds subglobose or subclavate, 2–4 mm long and wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum hemispherical, apiculate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical or subglobose; 3–5 mm long and wide; valves exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Extensively planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Molokai; and Hawai'i; and reproducing by seed in these areas.
