Key Characters:

Growth Form: Thorny trees 3–10 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves compound (bipinnate). Alternate. Leaflets pinnae 1 pair, leaflets 3–5 pairs per pinna or rachis, usually obovate, 1–3 cm long, 1–2.5 cm wide. Apex rounded or emarginate. Leaflet margins entire. Densely obliquely veined. Petiolate.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary, short racemes. Flowers caesalpinaceous; fragrant,12–16 mm in diameter; bracts minute, bracteoles absent. Calyx of 5 sepals; sepals yellow or purple–tinged, tube short, the lobes nearly distinct, imbricate in bud, deciduous. Corolla of 5 petals, yellow, subequal, imbricate. Stamens 10; filaments distinct, pilose at base; anthers basifixed. Ovary superior; shortly stalked; style filiform; stigma terminal, capitate.

Fruit: Pods 4–6 cm long; 0.8–1.2 cm wide; thin and membranous; compressed; dehiscent only along median ridges into 2 boat–shaped parts; not along the sutures. Seeds brown; longitudinally reniform; 5–7 mm long; 2–3 mm in diameter; transversely oblong.

Ploidy: 2n = 24

Habitat: Low elevation; dry sites.
