Description

Key Characters: Fruit a capsule; flowers in terminal cymes; sepals and petals distinct; staminal filaments distinct; leaves opposite; petioles ± as long as blades or less; expanding vegetative buds rounded at the tip; leaves not rugose, ; Leaves and inflorescences whooly (tomentose); Leaves obovate to elliptical oblong, rounded at the base, petiole 6-12 mm

Growth Form: A shrub or tree reaching a height of 30 m. or more.

Stems: Trunks straight ascending, sometimes two or three from the same root stock, bark gray, outer layer falling off in flakes or strips, branches stiff, more or less ascending, terete or angular when young,

Roots: with aerial adventitious roots

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades obovate, ovate or elliptical-oblong. Apexusually obtuse, rarely acute. Base cuneate to cordate Pale grey tomentose on both faces, but older leaves becoming glabrous above Margins entire and flat. Several pairs of raised veins radiating from base. Petioles of 6-12 mm Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences of 2–5 pairs of cymules, woolly pubescent; peduncles 7–18 mm long, 1–3 mm wide, bracts broadly ovate to suborbicular, 5–10 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers red, pink, orange, bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; pedicels 1-5 mm long, 1–2 mm wide; hypanthium 3–7 mm high, 3–8 mm wide. Sepals rounded to triangular, white-woolly, calyx 5 mm. long including the lobes; Petals oblong, tomentose or glabrate, with ciliate margins. Stamens 1–3 cm long. Ovary nearly superior; style 1.3–3 cm long.

Fruit: Capsules grayish woolly; slightly included to exerted; fruiting hypanthium 3–8 mm long and wide; pubescent or glabrous.
