Flowers: Flowers in axillary, terminal, or leaf–opposed racemes, rarely in panicles. Flowers papilionaceous. Pedicels swollen or jointed at base, bracteoles ± present. Calyx lobes small and margins undulate, or prominent, subequal or upper 2 lobes connate. Corolla variously colored, 5-lobed, standard obovate to suborbicular, usually short–clawed. Stamens 10, distinct or shortly connate at base. Ovary superior, short–stipitate; ovules several to numerous.

Fruit: Pods fleshy or coriaceous; dehiscent or tardily dehiscent; moniliform; terete (cylindrical) or slightly compressed; strongly constricted between the seeds; sometimes winged. Seeds 1–6(–15); ovoid to globose or ellipsoid; with a small hilum.
