Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Climbing vines.

Stems: Stems slender, angled.

Roots: Enlarged tuberlike root.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to ovate–hastate, 2–13 cm long, 2–9 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base deeply cordate. Surfaces puberulent, especially along veins. Margins entire. Conspicuously reticulate-veined. Petiolate. Stipules present, ocreae absent.

Flowers: Flowers in racemes, upper ones forming a panicle, the rachis usually terminated by a branched tendril. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Tepals bright pink to white, usually 5–18 mm long in fruit, becoming membranous. Stamens 7–9; filaments connate basally; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, (2)3(4)-carpellate, 1-celled, trigonous; ovule 1; styles 3; stigmas capitate, dry.

Fruit: Nuts strongly angled at apex.

Ploidy: 2n = 14; 40; 42–44; 48

Habitat: Disturbed area.

Elevation Range: 0–25 m.
