Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Biennial herbs 6–12(–15) dm tall in the second year, glandular puberulent and hispid throughout, the hairs forked or simple.

Stems:

Roots: Taprooted.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves in a basal rosette and with alternate cauline ones. Basal leaves obovate; cauline leaves lanceolate, basal leaves 10–30 cm long, 4.5–9 cm wide; cauline leaves becoming progressively smaller toward the inflorescence. Base subsessile and somewhat clasping the stem. Surfaces glandular puberulent and hispid. Margins of basal leaves crenate to dentate. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in clusters of 1–5 per node, forming a racemose inflorescence, pedicels 2–5 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx deeply 5-lobed, the lobes equal, 5.5–8(–9) mm long, the lobes lanceolate, glandular pubescent. Corolla slightly zygomorphic, 5-lobed, upper 2 lobes slightly shorter than and overlapping the lower 3 lobes in bud, the tube short, yellow, rotate,15–20 mm long, the lobes pubescent externally. Stamens 5, upper 3 staminal filaments densely white or violet villous, the lower 2 violet villous; anthers monothecal. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, with as many cells; ovule placentation axile; style solitary, terminal; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Capsules globose; 0.6–0.8 cm long; glandular puberulent and sometimes also with stellate or branched hairs; septicidal. Seeds numerous; obconical; with thick; undulate; longitudinal ribs; endosperm oily.
