Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennial herbs.

Stems: Stems 1–3 dm long, cespitose.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves numerous, basal. Blades linear, much shorter than stems, flat, grass-like, with flattened side toward stem. Margins entire. Sheathing, margins of sheaths hyaline, not prolonged into auricles. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in 2 to numerous glomerules on strict branches, forming umbellately branched cymes, lowest bract usually not extending more than ⅓ length of inflorescence. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Outer perianth parts uniformly dark. Inner perianth with 2 dark purplish lines, ca. 2 mm long, longer than outer ones, margins inflexed, apex obtuse. Stamens 3; filaments at least 3 times longer than anthers. Pollen grains remaining in tetrads, surrounded by a common exine. Ovary superior, carpels 1.

Fruit: Capsules obovoid; trigonous; mucronate; longer than to equaling perianth; often transversely wrinkled. Seeds pale brown; shiny; ovoid; ca. 4 mm long; minutely reticulate.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Naturalized in moist; open; disturbed depressions on margins of forest and in bogs.

Elevation Range: 850–1,300 m.
