Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 30–50 m tall.

Stems: Bark white or yellowish white, smooth throughout, often with accumulated shedding bark at base of trunk or rough–fibrous on part or all trunk and often also on larger branches.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 12–20 cm long, 0.8–2.5 cm wide. Apex attenuate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 10–25 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 4–13 mm long, pedicels absent. buds ovoid, 5–8 mm long, 3–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical or hemispherical–apiculate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical to subglobose; 4–8 mm long; 5–9 mm wide; valves 3–4; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Extensively planted on O'ahu and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed within the plantations.
