Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 9–20 m tall.

Stems: Bark gray, fibrous on trunk and larger branches, smaller branches gray and smooth.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate, 9–14 cm long, 1.3–3 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–30 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 6–15 mm long, pedicels 4–8 mm long. buds ovoid to fusiform, 9–12 mm long, 6–8 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical; obconical; or campanulate; 4–6 mm long; 6–9 mm wide; valves 4; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed; being found sporadically in these areas.
