Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades lanceolate to obovate. Surfaces covered with peltate glands especially on lower surface; blade coriaceous. Margins entire or rarely dentate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually in axillary or rarely terminal panicles, these sometimes decussate. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or unisexual (and then plants polygamous), actinomorphic. Calyx small, 4-toothed, valvate. Corolla lobes 4, induplicate–valvate in bud, shortly connate. Stamens 2(–4), inserted on corolla tube alternate with the lobes; anthers dithecal, oriented back–to–back, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, 2-celled; ovules 2 per cell; stigma capitate or shortly 2-lobed, dry.

Fruit: Drupes ovoid or subglobose; endocarp bony or crustaceous. Seeds usually 1.
