Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrub ca. 2 m tall.

Stems: Stems rounded to angular, pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic, 9–15 cm long x 4–8 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base cuneate above and below. Surfaces puberulous. Margins entire or toothed. Petioles 1–4.5 cm long, pubescent, base sometimes clasping the stem or perfoliate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1 to numerous in cymes 4–5 cm long, usually in the upper leaf axils, pedunculate or sessile, peduncles with minute to large and foliaceous, distinct or occasionally connate bracts, those of pedicels smaller. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx 2–5(6)-lobed, 23–28 mm long, pubescent, lobes 21–25 mm long, oblanceolate, deciduous or persistent in fruit. Corolla 25–27 mm long, pubescent. Stamens 5, inserted about halfway up corolla tube, the 2 upper Stamens fertile, others staminodial, +/– with abortive anthers; fertile anthers coherent positioned in throat of corolla tube, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits or occasionally by apical pores.

Fruit: Fruit a fleshy or firm berry; ovoid; ellipsoid to cylindrical; occasionally subglobose; often tipped by the persistent stylar beak. Seeds numerous; ellipsoid; minute; usually less than ca. 1 mm long; the surface reticulate.
