Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, decussate. 1–3(–5)-veined. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in simple, terminal cymes or panicles, or solitary and axillary. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Hypanthium campanulate to urceolate or subglobose at maturing glabrous, glutinous, or variously pubescent. Calyx lobes linear–subulate, persistent. Corolla of 5 petals, obovate, apex acute to obtuse or rarely retuse. Stamens 10, dimorphic to nearly similar; anthers ovate to oblong–ovate, abruptly constricted at apex into a short tubular rostrum, connective of larger anthers prolonged below anther sacs and modified ventrally at filament insertion into an erect, broadly clavate, apically retuse to emarginate appendage, connective of smaller anthers briefly prolonged and modified into a short, truncate or bifid appendage. Ovary inferior, distinct, 5-celled or rarely 4-celled by abortion, glabrous, placentation axile; ovules numerous; style simple and terminated by a punctiform to capitate stigma.

Fruit: Capsules with loculicidal dehiscence; enclosed by the hypanthium. Seeds oblong to ovoid–reniform; scarcely to conspicuously foveolate; minutely pitted; endosperm absent.
