Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 10–35 m tall.

Stems: Bark black, rough, hard, furrowed throughout, or at least on trunk and larger branches, upper branches white and smooth.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate, 7–14 cm long, 1.2–1.8 cm wide. Apex acuminate or uncinate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 10–20 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles quadrangular or terete (cylindrical), 7 –20 mm long, pedicels quadrangular, 2–15 mm long. buds ovoid, rostrate, 7–11 mm long, 4–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical or rostrate. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit ovoid; subglobose; or urceolate; 5–14 mm long; 6–14 mm wide; valves 5–6; included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Moloka'i; and Maui; and regenerating both within and near the plantations.
