Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Plants perennial or occasionally annual, 3–20 dm.

Stems: Stems mostly prostrate with ascending branches, much–branched, glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades linear to linear lanceolate or oblanceolate, 15–55 × 2–12 mm. Surfaces glabrous. Margins entire. Petioles very short and clasping the stem. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in heads, white or pinkish (drying silvery white), globose or cylindric, 7–30 × 7–10 mm; bracteoles slightly shorter than flowers; very short–pedicellate. Flowers bisexual (perfect), hypogynous. Calyx of 5 sepals; sepals connate basally, white, oblong, dorsiventrally compressed, thickened basally, 3–5 mm, chartaceous, apex of outer tepals obtuse, apex of inner tepals acute, spinose-tipped, densely villose. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 5; filaments connate basally; anthers 2-locular; pseudostaminodes absent. Ovary superior, 1-locular; ovule 1; stigmas subulate.

Fruit: Utricles indehiscent or splitting irregularly; included in tepals; 1.3 mm. Seeds 1 per fruit; 0.8–1 mm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Saline soils; sands of beaches; dunes; sand bars.

Elevation Range: 0–10 m.
