Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Many-branched small trees or shrubs 2–8 m tall.

Stems: Branches ascending, stiff, more or less tortuous, youngest ones puberulent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite, often clustered toward the tips of the branches. Blades oblanceolate, elliptic–oblanceolate to broadly elliptic–obovate, occasionally suborbicular, 10–50 mm long, (5–)8–16(–20) mm wide. Apex acute to rounded. Base attenuate. Upper surfaces glabrous except coarsely puberulent toward base; lower surfaces glabrous; blades Thin or thick, coriaceous. Margins entire. Pinnately veined. Petioles slightly winged, 0–12 mm long, upper surface puberulent. Stipules broadly deltate, 2–5 mm long, connate ca. 1⁄2 their length, margins short–ciliate, apex acuminate, with a small appendage, base puberulent.

Flowers: Flowers 1-2, 5-6-merous, subsessile. Flowers unisexual, dioecious or rarely monoecious, often heterostylous; insect-pollinated. Calyx of staminate flowers short–tubular, 0.8–2 mm long, irregularly toothed, the teeth whitish ciliate; pistillate flowers with Calyx short–tubular, 0.8–2 mm long, irregularly toothed, the teeth whitish ciliate. Corolla of staminate flowers narrowly campanulate, 6–8.5 mm long, the lobes 3–4.5 mm long; corolla of pistillate flowers narrowly funnelform, 3.2–4.5 mm long, the lobes 1–2.5 mm long; nectary disk usually present. Stamens 4-5(-10), alternate with the corolla lobes, inserted at base of corolla tube; filaments long-exserted; anthers penduous, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary inferior, occasionally partly so, or very rarely superior, 2(-4)-celled; ovule 1 per cell, basal, anatropous; style as many as carpels, 2(-4)lobed, divided nearly to base, terminal, slender; stigmas lobed or capitate, long-exserted, papillose-hirsute, dry or occasionally wet.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; juicy; orange to reddish orange; ellipsoid to subglobose; 6–10 mm long; apex with conspicuous persistent calyx teeth; with 2(-4); 1-seeded; planoconvex pyrenes. Seeds with well-developed oily endosperm; or endosperm occasionally scanty or absent.

Ploidy: 2n = 32*; 44*. The chromosome report (2n = 32) by Skottsberg (1953) should be confirmed.

Habitat: Subalpine shrubland; often forming a dominant component of the vegetation; and in subalpine woodland; occasionally in mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 1100–3050 m
