Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Dioecious or rarely monoecious trees 3–9 m tall.

Stems: Branches stiff, spines absent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to broadly elliptic or occasionally lanceolate, elliptic–lanceolate, or suborbicular, thick and chartaceous, or in xeric sites coriaceous, (5–)7–14(–21) cm long, (2.2–)3–8(–10.3) cm wide. Apex usually acuminate, ± slightly falcate, occasionally rounded or even emarginate. Base truncate to occasionally cordate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins glandular crenate or occasionally subentire, also sometimes repand. Pinnately veined. Petioles usually red, 1–1.5(–2) cm long.

Flowers: Flowers 1 to several in short, racemose cymes usually 1–2.5 cm long. Flowers unisexual and plants dioecious. Flowers 5–10 in infloresence. Staminate flowers on pedicels ca. 1.5–2.5 mm long, bracts oblong, ca. 1 mm long, ciliate and puberulent, nectary disk 4-lobed; pistillate flowers on pedicels usually 4–5 mm long, elongating to ca. 6–12 mm long in fruit, bracts similar to staminate ones, ca. 1.5 mm long. Calyx of staminate flowers with 4–5 sepals; sepals broadly elliptic, somewhat unequal in size, ca. 1.5 mm long, and usually slightly wider, ciliate and moderately to densely puberulent on back; pistillate flowers sepals 4–5, obovate to broadly elliptic, 2.5–3 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, pubescence similar to staminate sepals. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flower numerous; filaments ca. 5 mm long. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), surrounded by a crenulate nectary disk and occasionally vestigial stamens; style absent or short; stigma 2–3(4)-lobed.

Fruit: Berries deeply reddish purple; broadly ovoid to subglobose; 6–13 mm long. Seeds few; black; irregularly obovoid; ca. 4–5 mm long.

Ploidy: 2n = 20*

Habitat: Mesic forest; but also in dry woodland and wet forest.

Elevation Range: (250–)400–1,220 m.

  • Good for boards (Malo 1951:22).

PROPAGATION/CULTIVATION

  • Intermediate. Treated seeds germinate in 3-5 weeks; grow rapidly once transferred to individual pots; move young seedlings to open location so trunk/stems stiffen in response to wind; plantout in full/partial sun when 20-30 cm tall; lightly fertilize after new growth; variable soil (Culliney and Koebele 1999:112–114).
